Na Bolom Museum Guide
Na Bolom: A Journey into Lacandon Culture and Conservation Guide
Na Bolom, meaning "Jaguar House" in the Mayan Tzotzil language, is more than just a museum; it's a cultural center, a research institute, and a guesthouse dedicated to preserving the culture of the Lacandon Maya and protecting the Chiapas rainforest. Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the history, traditions, and struggles of this indigenous group, while also learning about the importance of environmental conservation. It's a unique and enriching experience that offers a deeper understanding of the region's cultural and ecological heritage. Na Bolom was founded in 1950 by Frans Blom, a Danish archaeologist, and Gertrude Duby, a Swiss journalist and anthropologist. They dedicated their lives to studying and supporting the Lacandon Maya, who were facing increasing pressure from deforestation and cultural assimilation. The house itself was their home and became a gathering place for researchers, artists, and activists. Over time, it evolved into a museum showcasing their extensive collection of Lacandon artifacts, photographs, and research materials. The museum also played a crucial role in advocating for the rights of the Lacandon people and promoting sustainable practices in the region. At Na Bolom, you can explore the museum's exhibits, which display traditional Lacandon clothing, tools, religious objects, and photographs documenting their way of life. Take a guided tour to learn about the history of the house and the work of Frans and Gertrude. Participate in workshops on traditional crafts or attend lectures on Lacandon culture and environmental issues. The guesthouse offers a unique opportunity to stay in a historic setting and support the museum's mission. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition directly tied to Na Bolom, the on-site restaurant serves delicious regional cuisine, providing a taste of Chiapas.
